Our Goal

Our initial goal on behalf of the International Ornithological Congress (IOC) was to facilitate communication in ornithology and in the conservation of the world bird species through the use of a reasonably standardized set of English names linked to current species taxonomy. Dynamic advances in taxonomy, however, require accommodation, with the result that we now devote ourselves to managing an ever evolving world bird list.

To this end we provide a complete list of the extant birds of the world that we update regularly to include changes of names or classification, additions of newly described species as well as proposed splits and lumps, and taxonomic comments.We strive to include the latest information on the taxonomy of world birds. The English names recommended follow explicit guidelines for spelling and construction that increase clarity and consistent application.

Worldbirders are a substantial and growing force in ornithology. And this is strictly a volunteer project. Therefore, in this global world of wiki-style sharing of knowledge, we invite worldbirders and ornithologsts alike to help us keep the IOC list accurate, vital, and accessible. The worldwide use of this website and the IOC list is encouraging.  The IOC list of world bird species is now available also through Avibase, thanks to Denis LePage and Bird Studies Canada. The Avibase database allows users to create checklists for different localities using alternative world lists. The IOC list is also the species framework for the Tree of Life - Aves project and new listing programs Wildlife Recorder, BirdStack and BirdJournal.
